introduction

L28 Self-Leveling Mortar is a single-component, cement-based mortar enhanced with advanced polymeric binders. Due to its excellent fluidity, rapid leveling, and negligible volume change during curing, it is ideal for creating smooth, level surfaces in various applications such as floor coverings, filling and leveling uneven surfaces, and similar purposes.

Application

L28 self-leveling mortar is recommended for preparing a smooth and polished substrate for subsequent flooring steps such as parquet, tile, ceramic, epoxy, and polyurethane, as well as other cement-based products.

Applications:

  • Underfloor heating systems
  • Substrates for epoxy and polyurethane flooring
  • Substrates for 3D epoxy flooring
  • Preparation of substrates for tiling
  • Creation of a slope-free and smooth substrate in the shortest possible time.

Properties of self-leveling mortar

  • Desired fluidity with very high adhesion to the underlying surface
  • No change in volume and free from shrinkage
  • Ease of use and high speed of application
  • High mechanical strength
  • Resistant to abrasion and dust formation
  • Capable of loading in the shortest time (48 hours after application)

  • Approximate yield: 2 to 2.1 kg/m² per mm thickness
  • Ambient temperature during application: +5 to +35 °C
  • Water to powder ratio: Between 22 to 24% of the total weight
  • Suitable application thickness: 3 to 15 mm

Substrate quality

The substrate (base surface) must be suitable for self-leveling installation. This means it should be:

  • Sound and strong concrete: The concrete must be in good condition and have a compressive strength of at least 25 N/mm².
  • Free from defects: Any weak areas or defects, such as holes or voids, must be repaired.
  • Clean and dry: The substrate should be clean, dry, and free from any contaminants, including dirt, oil, grease, coatings, or other substances.
  • Sound and even: The substrate must be sound and have sufficient load-bearing capacity.
  • Repaired and filled: Any holes or voids must be repaired and filled.

Waiting time for coating after self-leveling installation

How long should you wait to apply a coating after using a self-leveling floor compound?

The answer depends on the thickness of the self-leveling layer and the weather. As a general rule:

  • Thin layers: If the layer is less than 3 mm thick, wait about 24 hours.
  • Medium layers: For layers up to 5 mm thick, wait around 48 hours.
  • Thick layers: If the layer is less than 10 mm thick, wait approximately 72 hours.

Important considerations:

  • Weather: Hot, dry conditions can speed up the drying process, while cold, humid conditions can slow it down.
  • Substrate: Make sure the surface you’re applying the self-leveler to doesn’t absorb too much water from the compound. This could weaken the mortar.

Always check the specific product instructions for the most accurate waiting times and any additional recommendations.

In essence, the thicker the layer, the longer you should wait. However, environmental factors can significantly influence the drying time.

Curing time

At an average temperature of 23 degrees Celsius and humidity up to 50%,

  • Light, human-friendly traffic: 24 hours
  • Heavy traffic: 7 days

Please note: The indicated times are approximate and will be affected by changes in the substrate and environmental conditions, especially temperature and relative humidity.

How to prepare and apply self-leveling

After applying primer  to the prepared surface:

  1. Mixing:

    • Pour one measure of clean water into a suitable container.
    • Add five measures of powder and mix thoroughly with an electric mixer at 300-400 RPM for approximately 3 minutes until a smooth paste is formed.
    • Allow the mixture to rest briefly, then mix again.
  2. Application:

    • Using a special trowel, evenly spread the mixture onto the prepared surface.
    • To remove trapped air bubbles, it is recommended to use a de-airing roller.

Final word

Achieving a top-tier industrial concrete flooring requires meticulous planning, coordination, and control. The concrete mix must be of the highest quality, and the delivery schedule to the job site must be closely monitored and consistent. Environmental conditions significantly impact the concrete surface moisture, subsequently affecting the application and quality of the final product. The stages involved in spreading the concrete using specialized equipment must be precisely timed. Finally, the proper execution and finishing of the concrete are crucial for attaining a high-quality final surface.

An experienced industrial hard concrete flooring contractor who understands the nuances and intricacies of concrete installation and the use of appropriate equipment plays a pivotal role in producing a quality product. Professional contractors employ a quality control system.
